Free workshop in Zaragoza & Huesca: Independent listening & Rating scales, subjective assessment and judging student output

Trinity College London organises the free workshop “Independent listening & Rating scales, subjective assessment and judging student output”.

The two sessions in this Trinity workshop are part of the support Trinity College offers teachers around Spain within the framework of ‘Best Practice’. Although Best Practice workshops usually make reference to Trinity’s GESE and ISE exams, their content is chosen so that it will also be useful to teachers who are not preparing candidates for either exam.

Independent listening (1h 30min)

Trinity’s Integrated Skills in English exam involves an independent listening task designed to assess the candidates ability to deal with real-life listening to podcasts, classes or lectures. In this session we’ll begin by looking at the difference between interactive and independent listening, and at the special difficulties the latter supposes for the listener. Then we’ll explore a range of activities that we can use to help learners to become better independent listeners.

Rating scales, subjective assessment and judging student output (1h 30min)

How do you assess something as complex as writing or speaking? What factors mark the difference between somebody who writes/speaks well, and somebody who doesn’t? This workshop begins with a guided tour of the principles of subjective assessment. By the end, not only will you understand Trinity’s GESE and ISE rating scales, you will also have ideas as to how to use them yourself as you prepare learners for either exam.

Trainer: Robin Walker (one of the trainers at the CARLEE’s “Saturday” in 2017)

Robin has worked in English Language Teaching since 1981. For over 20 years he taught at the Escuela Universitaria de Turismo de Asturias, leaving in 2007 to found English Global Communication. He now works as a teacher educator, and ELT consultant, author and materials writer. He regularly collaborates with Trinity College, Oxford University Press, and MacMillan Education, and is the author of numerous articles on teaching English, and a handbook on English pronunciation.
